Can I Save or Keep My Existing Car Registration Plate?
Can I keep my existing number plate? Quite simply, yes you can save it on a retention certificate.
Number Plate Retention
If you have a registration plate on a car that you are selling or scrapping then you must make an application to retain the registration by assigning it to a Retention Document (V778). The document is issued by the DVLA so that the registration is safeguarded for use at a later date. The cost to retain a registration is £80.00 but it’s important to note that the application must be made whilst the vehicle is still registered in your name and taxed. Once the vehicle changes ownership or becomes scrapped or written off, your rights to the number plate are lost.
DVLA Retention Certificate
Once the application has been completed The DVLA will then post a certificate to you which will be valid for 10 years. It’s important to keep this certificate in a safe place and under no circumstances should a copy be given to anyone as it could be transferred without your knowledge. Never reveal the document reference number that appears on the certificate either as this is another sure fire way of losing your rights to the plate.
