TVR Number Plates

TVR Number Plates

911 number plates have always been one of the best selling number plate combinations, although TVR Number plates used to be very popular in the late 1990’s.  The TVR sports car company was started way back in 1947 by 24 year old Trevor Wilkinson who had left school 10 years earlier to become an apprentice engineer.  He was involved with the company until 1965 although he had left a managerial position in 1962. The name TVR came from an abbreviation of his name TreVoR using the letters TVR and the name has been associated with true thoroughbred British sports cars ever since.

The company spent most of its life in the town of Blackpool in Lancashire and built small powerful 2 seater sports cars with either 6 or 8 cylinder engines. As these cars were generally built from lightweight material, they were of course much lighter than their counterparts and were therefore much quicker and didn’t rust, which was one of the attractions to many buyers.

The business was broken up in 2006 and was situated in various parts of the country. In 2012 it was announced by the then chairman of the company that it was going to be too expensive to continue production of the cars and so no new vehicles have been made since that time, however a new British owner has relaunched the company website and there are whispers that production may start again in the near future with a car known as “Thunder”.  According to a well known motoring journalist, though, there are some trade mark discussions as TVR Italia now claim to have the only valid trademark of the TVR brand although its though the British owner confirmed that the rights were theirs.

TVR Registrations used to sell very well in the early and mid nineties, but when production slowed down ten years later, the sale of TVR number plates almost dried up completely and so there were some real bargains to be had.  TVR number plates with the model number were also very popular with 350 and 400 proving to be amongst the most desirable. If the new TVR car does get built, then we may see a resurgence in TVR number plates sales.
